Location: Gualala, California

Note: This retreat is by invitation only.

A bit of history: In 1963, watercolorist Milford Zornes and his wife Pat Zornes bought Maynard Dixon’s Summer Home and Studio in Mt. Carmel, Utah from Dixon’s widow, Edith Hamlin. Milford and Pat organized annual watercolor workshops for fellow artists and students so they could paint together.

In the spirit of Zornes’ vision, the Milford Zornes Watercolor Retreat (MZWR) was initiated by Carolyn Lord, with assistance from Southern Utah watercolorist, Spike Ress.

2017 and 2018, MZWR was held in Mt. Carmel and was graciously supported by Susan and Paul Bingham, the founders of The Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts and restorers of the Maynard Dixon Home & Studio, in Mt Carmel, Utah.

2019, the Milford Zornes Watercolor Retreat will honor Milford’s love of travel and his first watercolor teacher Millard Sheets who had a home on the Northern California coast.  We’ll paint in Gualala, CA October 14-18, 2019.

A bit more history: In the 1960’s Mary and Millard Sheets lived in Southern California and inspired by the picturesque landscape and budding art community in Gualala, they built their home and studio, calling it “Barking Rocks” after the sea lion colony on the nearby island. Mary and Millard welcomed artists and students to visit and paint. After their passing, the home was purchased by artist Susan Routledge Jackson and her husband Frank Jackson, and they are committed to continuing the artistic legacy of “Barking Rocks”.

MZWR artists have been invited by Susan and Frank to tour “Barking Rocks” on Monday afternoon tour and to return to paint all day Tuesday.

Schedule:
Monday, October 14: Arrive by Noon
Monday, October 14: 3:00 pm tour of Barking Rocks
Tuesday, October 15: Breakfast, Paint all day at Barking Rocks
Wednesday, October 16: Breakfast, Paint all day
Thursday, October 17: Breakfast, Paint all day
Friday, October 18: Breakfast, Depart

The retreat is designed to have minimal structure to allow for maximal painting and camaraderie. This is not a workshop nor  a competitive plein-air event.

The Surf Motel will be our “home base”.  The grounds of The Surf Motel over-look the Gualala River and Pacific Ocean. It has rooms at various price-points: $139-189.. Some rooms have an ocean-view; some have kitchenettes; some have 1 bed while others have 2. The Surf Motel serves a full, hot breakfast from 8:30 to 10:000 am so we will be able to continue the enjoyable tradition of breakfast together before a day of painting. Even if you are staying elsewhere, breakfast at The Surf Motel will be provided for MZWR attendees.
